CBP Requires Chinese Postal Codes Effective March 19, 2023
Regarding “The Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act” (UFLPA), Customs & Border Protection has advised the Trade community in their Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act Region Alert Last updated: January 26, 2023 that they will require Postal Codes for all shipments from The People’s Republic of China effective March 19, 2023. This will require that Manufacturer Identification Codes (MID) include the correct Chinese postal code. Existing MID codes missing the Postal Code must be updated for shipments arriving March 19 or later.
The importer’s due diligence under the UFLPA includes providing the correct postal codes by connecting with their suppliers and manufacturers in China to confirm all addresses and postal codes prior to shipments arriving on or after March 19, 2023. JJB urges its customers to take this opportunity now to obtain accurate postal codes for their shipments from China to avoid potential delays and costs associated with inaccurate or missing Chinese postal codes.
JJB staff will review Customs entries for MID postal codes prior to making entry for Chinese postal codes and may reach out to our clients to verify the postal codes prior to making entry.
The UFLPA was signed in to law on December 23, 2021 to discourage the use of forced labor and requires importers to prove their goods, parts, raw materials, sub-assembly, etc. are not made with forced labor.
