Los Angeles Port Strike Update
Date: July 17, 2007
A strike does not appear imminent at the ports of Los Angeles
and Long Beach as negotiations between clerical workers and shippers
near settlement on a new contract, according to both sides. The
two sides reported progress late Monday night after they kept
talking beyond a midnight Sunday night deadline. A union representing
clerks at the nation's largest port complex submitted a revised
contract to employers yesterday that one labor official hoped
would avert a possible shutdown of the docks. The proposal came
after both sides in the labor dispute agreed to continue negotiating
past a 12:01 a.m. Monday strike deadline set by the union. At
this time, talks were postponed until Wednesday because the employers'
lead negotiator needed to attend to a family medical issue. In
the meantime, union employees will continue to work at the ports
of Los Angeles and Long Beach while negotiations were considered
ongoing. No new strike deadline has been set.
